Tall furnace volume for suspension firing.

Because a large share of the fuel burns while suspended in the furnace, the grate requires less area. The VME therefore uses a narrower section and greater height to provide gas residence time above 2 seconds, very low upward gas velocity and reduced particle carryover.

  • Suitable for bagasse, wood chips, peanut shells and a broad range of biomass residues.
  • The water-cooled grate and suspension firing form a world-class arrangement for bagasse and varied biomass residues.
  • No refractory lining in the furnace and no ash accumulation points.
  • Optional superheater installed in the furnace, with radiant and convective heat absorption, for higher steam temperatures.
  • Alternatively, the superheater can be installed downstream of the convection section, supporting simpler operation, conventional materials and longer service life.

HYBRID ARCHITECTURE

Firetube convection simplicity with a large watertube furnace.

The VME combines a single-pass firetube convection body with a high-volume vertical watertube furnace. This simple arrangement supports high combustion performance, low gas-side pressure drop, practical maintenance and a strong cost-benefit ratio for large biomass steam duties.

High-temperature combustion air

The single-pass firetube body can be configured to deliver an appropriate flue-gas temperature at the air-preheater inlet. Combustion air above 250 °C supports stable burning of wet biomass and helps eliminate refractory linings from the furnace.

This combination of high-temperature combustion air and a refractory-free furnace is established in high-performance boilers used by Brazilian sugar and ethanol plants. Steammaster has applied the concept for decades in successful operating projects.
